Little River Wampum is the work of artist Robert J. Hayward, a member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. His work focuses on highlighting the natural beauty and cultural significance of wampum through handcrafted jewelry and designs inspired by the traditions of the Northeastern Woodlands.

Using quahog shell, the traditional material used to create wampum, Robert carefully shapes and designs each piece to showcase the unique purple and white patterns found within the shell. Because of the natural layers within the quahog, no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Growing up in southeastern Connecticut, Robert has long been connected to the coastal environment where quahog shells are found. This connection to place continues to influence his work today. Each piece reflects both the natural materials of the region and an appreciation for the long tradition of shell craftsmanship that has existed throughout the Northeastern Woodlands.

Through Little River Wampum, Robert aims to create jewelry that honors the beauty of the shell itself while sharing a deeper appreciation for the history, materials, and artistry behind wampum.
